Special edition print sale – TANJA LAŽETIĆ – Flowers 55
Together with Galerija Fotografija, we’ve decided to produce a special edition of five images, digitally modified to make up ten in the end, each containing two flowers. They would only be available for the time around my birthday. From 8th March, to my birthday on the 14th of March, when I’ll turn 55 (a useful number for a series of two flowers in an edition of ten, otherwise not at all), to the end of the month, it will be possible to choose from ten smaller flower duets in Galerija Fotografija.

”Hardly any motif in the field of art history has been depicted, discussed and interpreted as often and in so many ways as a flower. It is the carrier of such a wide array of symbols and meanings – their interpretations range from classical myths of Narcissus and Daphne, to Christian interpretations of flowers as symbols of virtues and biblical tales, to Romantic literature of the 19th century, which intensely associated flowers with love and beauty. Because of their historic role in art, flowers are such a powerful semiotic sign, their depictions so drenched in socio-historic meanings, that the notion of a neutral gaze is completely unimaginable. Out perception is consciously or subconsciously saturated with associative meanings. The artist Tanja Lažetić is aware of this, questioning past connotations of flowers in her photography and placing them firmly in the sphere of contemporaneity.” Hana Čeferin

Precarious Environments

”A series of 26 photographs by Tanja Lažetić entitled Gasoline Stations, Again (2016) references Ed Ruscha’s iconic book Twentysix Gasoline Stations. In 2010, the author took photographs of gas stations when she travelled from Ljubljana to Sarajevo, a journey that took her not only back into her family’s history, but also back to the hotspot of the dissolution of the former country. MOver those six years, most of the twenty-six gas stations have changed owners or were destroyed, which the author crossed out in red. Ed Ruscha described gas stations as monuments of the modern age, but for Tanja Lažetić they stand as monuments to the dissolution of Yugoslavia.” Ana Mizerit

No Looking Back, Okay?
Maribor Art Gallery, Maribor, Slovenia

Ceramic plates are hung on the wall. I have drawn an eye on them with a laser cutter. Each plate with the same large eye in the middle is fastened to the wall in a way that it can fall off. We do not know when this is going to happen, but in case we are there, we will be disturbed by the sound of breaking ceramics. The exhibition changes according to the growing number of shards on the ground.
