  • Hotel Kumrovec

    Kumrovec is a village in Croatian and the birthplace of Tito. This is the only reason why that hotel was built in 1974. Although an empty today, it still employs a receptionist and maintenance staff, who try to slow down the process of dilapidation.

    Every day, from July 16th to August 12th, 2000, a new image from another live webcam helped me outline a journey around Europe. Writing greetings from places I haven’t visited allowed me to walk on the border of two worlds.

    In 1977, Sanja Iveković made a book the Tragedy of a Venus, juxtaposing in it photographs of Marilyn Monroe with her own photos. I have photographed her book, printed it out, and stamped each page with the word whore.

    The gas stations along the road from Ljubljana to Sarajevo. Traveling to Sarajevo along in places where traces of socialism, war, and unbridled privatization converge, was also a return to the heart of the breakup of Yugoslavia.
  • Nine Swimming Pools Behind a Broken Glass

    The photos of swimming pools from old Yugoslavian tourist brochures. They were taken at more or less the same time American artist Edward Ruscha took his photographs of swimming pools for his book Nine Swimming Pools and a Broken Glass (1968). The Los Angeles pools were in the yards of luxurious homes, private and empty. The Yugoslavian pools were their exact opposite.

    Eight fruits and some seeds from eight different countries in black and white photographs and their negative images. The book is an appropriation of Ed Ruscha’s and Jonathan Monk’s book Colored People.

    I have been taking photographs of the vapor trails airplanes leave behind in the sky since 2004. At first I was surprised how rarely the sky above us is without any. Straight lines in the sky speak of human dominance. They also indicate that the city I live is not an endpoint. Ljubljana is a flyover town.

    I was an artist in residence in Vienna for three months and every day I wrote a postcard about what I ate to my mother. They are the evidence of my pregnancy and later on, the miscarriage.

    The book of colour photographs documents Berlin over a span of 40 years. The images are bracketed by two photographs of a lion dozing in captivity in the Berlin Zoo, one taken in 1965 and the other in 2006. While Berlin struggled through momentous changes, the lion’s situation remained remarkably the same.
